This vintage chest is from Gansu province in Northern China and dates from circa 1920. Its front is decorated with floral and butterfly motifs which symbolise happiness and domestic bliss. The lid can be secured with a metal latch and the lower part of the front is decorated with a carved relief, which is typical for the region. This chest has recently been lightly restored in an artisan workshop in rural Beijing; the original transparent gloss finish has been renewed to protect the original artwork. We think this piece can add a lovely bohemian touch to a contemporary interior.
