Vintage Chinese Cabinet from Gansu - Floral Motifs

This vintage sideboard comes from Gansu Province in Northern China and dates from circa 1930s. It has two doors and an inner shelf and has recently been restored in an artisan workshop in rural Beijing. The layered cream yellow and turquoise paint finish is inspired by traditional furniture painting techniques. The left door panel depicts chrysanthemum, a noble flower, which symbolises intellectual achievement and lotus, which is associated with love and purity. The right door panel is adorned with peony flowers, a symbol of status and prosperity. A cracked finish is associated with good luck. This cabinet makes a great statement piece and will look stunning in a living room or a master bedroom.
