This vintage kitchen cupboard comes from Dongbei province in Northern China and dates from circa 1900. It has recently been lightly restored in an artisan workshop in rural Beijing. A row of four airy fretwork compartments at the top was designed to keep food supplies well-ventilated at a time when fridges were not yet available. The mid-section contains two drawers, while the bottom consists of three separate compartments, each fitted with an internal shelf. The large central compartment is closed with two doors, the two smaller compartments on the side with one door each. The piece is painted in an irregular dun colour. The green and red fretwork at the top and the geometric relief in yellow and brown at the bottom give it a lively, textured appearance. It has a high gloss finish.
